Greetings!
I am Kimberly Romero. I grew up in Burlington, NC and was a first-generation college student at Wake Forest University for my undergraduate degree. My parents are immigrants from El Salvador, giving me a deep-rooted connection with my identity and ethnicity. These factors have fueled my passion for the work I do now as the Director of Undergraduate Admissions for Diversity & Access at Elon University. After undergrad, I completed 2 years with Teach for America as an Elementary School educator in Miami, FL. I completed my Teach For America Commitment in 2020, amidst the pandemic, while also navigating the start of my position at Elon. I am currently the first in my family to pursue a graduate degree, a journey that has been deeply fulfilling. The foundation I gained at Wake Forest has been instrumental in my journey. A class with Dr. Sarah Dahill-Brown in my senior year deepened my interest in education policy and equity. Dr. Betina Wilkinson’s expertise with the intersection of politics and race was pivotal, and countless other professors allowed me to be a critical thinker, writer, and service-oriented leader. To fellow First Gen Deacs – explore the paths a liberal arts education offers. I arrived set on a pre-med path, and I soon discovered a different world that sparked deeper curiosity for me. Use your resources and networks as you explore your own journey. Lastly, dare to dream big!
